Virtual tour of the „Hornstaad and Arbon House”

These two experimental houses exemplify two early architectural building principles at Lake Constance and regions around the Alps.

The „Hornstaad-House“, 1996 was constructed in conjunction with the German Children’s TV series „The Show With the mouse“. It is a pole building with walls formed of woven wattle-work, coated with clay. The roofs were made of thatch, turf, grass, or rushes. "Uhldi" the Stone Age Man, who is a staff member at the museum, together with an archeo-technician, sometimes use the Hornstaad-House as their quarters. The „Arbon-House“, constructed in 1998 together with Swiss archaeological colleges from the Thurgau region, is a pole building with walls out of wooden boards and a shingle roof. Both houses are used for experimental long-term observations, and can therefore not be entered by visitors.
